Earth Science: Thunderstorms

Severe weather affects people all over the world in various ways. Every year there are numerous casualties, as well as damage to property (particularly crops and livestock) in countries across the globe. The severe weather in a thunderstorm can often invest itself in the form of lightening, hail, ice storms, flooding, and tornadoes.

Scientists, especially Meteorologists, try to understand the factors that lead to the development of thunderstorms. Models and visualizations play a key role in enhancing our ability to understand and predict such weather phenomena.

Complexity of the thunderstorm data obtained from a numerical model requires advanced mapping techniques. AVS Express provides high-end visualization modules that can create an isosurface -- a three-dimensional surface representing a constant value.  To explore the shape of a thunderstorm, scientists might plot a surface of constant temperature, constant pressure, or constant humidity.
