Ice Breaker Rules

The rules:

  1. There are four teams, with part of each team in NC and part in Illinois. Red and yellow will be the 'hot' teams, Green and purple the 'cool' teams.

  2. When we begin, teams in North Carolina will open the package on their table to reveal a structure made of Duplo blocks. Teams in Illinois will open their corresponding packages to find an unstructured set of blocks. The goal is for the Illinois team to recreate the structure in North Carolina.

  3. After revealing their structures, half-teams on each side will have two minutes to discuss communications strategy and determine the order of 'runners' - everybody on the team needs to be a 'runner' at least once.

  4. At the 2:00 mark, the coordinators will call for the first HOT runners. The red and yellow teams in North Carolina will each send one person (a runner) to the respective red and yellow telecom rooms in NC, and red and yellow teams in Illinois will also each send one person to the respective telecom rooms in Illinois. Individual runners will have one minute (15 seconds to get there, 45 to talk) to communicate information about the structure.

  5. At the 3:00 mark, the first HOT runners will leave the telecom rooms to return to their groups, and will have one minute to work with their groups before sending the next runner

  6. Also at the 3:00 mark, the coordinators will call for the first COOL runners. The green and purple teams on both sides will send runners to their respective telecom rooms to conference, again for one minute

  7. At 4:00 COOL runners #1 return to their groups and HOT runners #2 go to meet
    5:00 HOT #2 return COOL #2 meet
    6:00 COOL #2 return HOT #3 meet
    7:00 HOT #3 return COOL #3 meet
    8:00 COOL #3 return HOT #4 meet
    9:00 HOT #4 return COOL #4 meet
    10:00 COOL #4 return HOT #5 meet
    11:00 HOT #5 return COOL #5 meet
    12:00 COOL #5 return HOT #6 meet
    13:00 HOT #6 return COOL #6 meet
    14:00 COOL #6 return

  8. Teams have two minutes to finalize their structures, at 16:00 all teams will bring their structures together to be compared in the (access grid room).

  9. Props are not allowed! Hand motions and verbal communication is fine, but you are not allowed to use any 'items' to demonstrate what you are trying to communicate.

So, how did your team do? Think you can do better with another try? This time, you will have three minutes to meet and strategize with your ENTIRE team (both Illinois and North Carolina) before trying the process again, but this time with reversed roles! (North Carolina will try to recreate a new complete structure that is in Illinois.)
